Perhaps no scenes in Doctor Who are as upsetting as the demise of his beloved Doctor - the regeneration, of course, but also the tragic rallying against his own imminent demise.
Big Finish Doctor Who The Mega Collection Torrent Series Of ModernBut where exactly does Jodie Whittakers debut run belong in the greater Who oeuvre (Or should that be the Whoeuvre) After much deliberation, head-scratching and nights spent alone with our box-sets, weve ranked all 11 series of modern Who since 2005 plus the 200910 specials.![]()
Series Six (2011). Big Finish Doctor Who The Mega Collection Torrent How To Do AMid-season premiere Lets Kill Hitler is a fine example of how to do a comic romp well, while the series as a whole makes terrific use of Arthur Darvill as Rory - now a full-time TARDIS traveller. But theres a few too many middling episodes: The Curse of the Black Spot, Night Terrors Closing Time and The Rebel Flesh The Almost People to name but five. And finale episode The Wedding of River Song grows rather convoluted in Steven Moffats attempts to unravel the complex web hes entangled his characters in. Series Seven - and the 50th (2012-13). And then wraps up Amy and Rorys story in near-perfect fashion with The Angels take Manhattan. As with the series before, it suffers from a few episodes - Hide, The Crimson Horror, Nightmare in Silver - that end up less intergalactic and more middle of the road. And the less said about musical misfire The Rings of Akhaten the better. Ice Warrior chiller Cold War though is a bit of an underrated classic - and what really pushes series seven ahead of series six is if you throw in Novembers 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor. Celebrating a half-century of Doctor Who, its brilliantly, unapologetically extravagant and soppy and wonderful - with a captivating Tom Baker cameo the icing on an immensely satisfying birthday cake. Series Eight (2014). Both he and our new Doctor, Peter Capaldi, take a little while to nail it, and the series gets off to an uncertain start. But by the time their first truly outstanding episode - the moody and magnificent Listen - rolls around, theres no question that this is a gamble thats paid off. Bar one real stinker - the juvenile and ill-conceived In the Forest of the Night - series eight is a decent debut series for Capaldi. One that delivers fun capers ( Robot of Sherwood ), experimental winners ( Flatline ) and good old-fashioned scare-fests ( Mummy on the Orient Express ). Jenna Colemans companion Clara also benefited from a revised approach, with Moffat and co. But theres bound to be teething troubles with the beginning of any new era and so it was here Jodie Whittaker brought a joy and lightness and energy to the Doctor, but a lack of memorable villains meant that her Time Lord only occasionally got to show us the flip-side, the grit and the determination. An over-crowded TARDIS also meant that not every episode serviced all of our four leads, with Yaz (Mandip Gill) in particular going underutilised, while the episodes themselves ranged from the superb Rosa, The Witchfinders to the middling Arachnids in the UK, The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos. This was a series with heaps of potential, but one that didnt quite get everything right straight out of the gate. Series 10 (2017). The breathtaking Oxygen was a later highlight, but the Monks trilogy Extremis, The Pyramid at the End of the World and The Lie of the Land ended up a bit of a confused anticlimax (and took up a quarter of the entire series). The Doctor Falls was a heartbreaking, spectacular send-off to Peter Capaldis Doctor (even if he didnt officially depart until Twice Upon a Time ), who formed a terrific pairing with Pearl Mackies sparky Bill Potts. The Specials (2009-10). But Novembers The Waters of Mars was an utterly terrifying take on the shows classic base-under-siege format, with some of the scariest monsters it has featured to date. And topped with a superb performance from David Tennant as a desperate Doctor whos lost sight of his responsibilities. Its also down to the strength of Tennants performances that his over-stuffed swansong The End of Time succeeds, despite threatening to collapse under its own weight.
